Micro data centers: a practical view for small IT teams

What a micro data center is, who it suits, and why most companies are better off renting a unit in one than building their own.

McLaut secure data center with server racks

Between the server closet in an office and a large data center there is a middle class of facility: the micro data center. It is a compact site of a few racks with its own power, cooling and access control. It can be modular or portable, but it does not have to be: what matters is that the infrastructure was designed for the load rather than improvised later.

Who it suits

Small and medium organisations that need a dozen or two servers, not thousands. A large data center is too expensive for them, and an office server room is too fragile: one power cut or a failed air conditioner stops the business.

What you have to build yourself

  • Pick a location: an existing building, a separate room or a container.
  • Provide power with a reserve: UPS, generator, fuel stock.
  • Install cooling sized for the real heat output of the racks.
  • Arrange physical security: locks, cameras, an access log.
  • Only then install racks and servers.

Each item is capital expense plus someone on duty. That is why the original author reminds readers that if a dedicated site is out of reach, colocation remains a sensible alternative.

Our conclusion

The McLaut micro data center is exactly that middle class, already built. You rent a unit in a rack while power, diesel, cooling and security are already running. It is cheaper than your own server room with a generator and simpler than moving to Kyiv.
